Gender Studies and Wissenschaftlichkeit in Germany

The history of women and gender studies in Germany differs in some ways from that in the United States, although tightly linked to the Anglo-American experience. The seeds of this academic discipline were sown during the second women’s movement in the late 1960s and 1970s. This essay looks back to the beginnings and brings to light the present situation and highlights challenges for the future.
