Abstract

This paper traces the career of the psychoanalyst Ernst Kris after his emigration to the United States in 1940 and describes how his work as a psychoanalyst took new dimensions that embraced a myriad of activities. He edited The Psychoanalytic Study of the Child, directed longitudinal research studies at the Yale Child Study Center, and advocated for the importance of research on infant and child development for advancing psychoanalytic theory and technique, including research on the creative process in young children. At the New York Psychoanalytic Society and Institute, he was a teacher and training analyst, a discussant of 30 papers presented at its scientific meetings, and Director of the Gifted Adolescent Project. With Heinz Hartmann and Rudolph Loewenstein, he co-authored six papers on psychoanalytic drive theory and ego psychology.
