Abstract

The novel Af der arisher zayt by Khaye Elboym-Dorembus is a unique example of Holocaust literature. It was published in the mid-1950s as a serial in the popular (and only) daily Israeli Yiddish newspaper, Letste nayes—the only Holocaust novel by a woman author published by that newspaper in those years. Af der arisher zayt demonstrates the role of literature in reestablishing traditional gender roles that were blurred in wartime. It also offers a unique example of how the reestablishment of those roles helped construct fresh national sentiments.
