Land of Enchantment Wildflowers by Willa F Finley and Lashara J Nieland is a delightful new addition to the list of books celebrating New Mexico’s wildflowers. The book is well researched and contains a wealth of natural history information for plant enthusiasts—amateurs and professionals alike. It contains an excellent representation of 200 commonly encountered plants throughout New Mexico. Although not a true field guide with taxonomic keys and plant descriptions, it does contain excellent photographs that help with identification, including photos of similar species, life stages, close-ups, and growth habits. The book differs from other New Mexico wildflower guides because instead of using the limited space to repeat plant descriptions, it provides explanations of the derivation of botanical names; a section on habitat and distribution; and a natural history of the species, including pollinators, xeriscape uses, palatability or toxicity to humans and wildlife, and a thorough description of ethnobotanical uses. Hence, the book tells a story for each plant species, which contributes to our ability to appreciate each plant not only for its unique look but also for its role in the environment and the different ways in which plants are used by humans and animals. In addition, the authors provide a glossary of terms used throughout the book, an easily searchable index arranged alphabetically by common and botanical names, and an extensive bibliography for those interested in more in-depth coverage of the topics addressed. Finley and Nieland have created an excellent natural history reference, enhancing our knowledge and appreciation of wildflowers in New Mexico. [End Page 255]
