ANN SADDLEMYER A Checklist ofthe Publications of Clifford Leech Ten years ago, as Acting Director of the newly-established Graduate Centre for Study of Drama, Clifford Leech concluded his report to the President with the following comment: 'But the Centre is engaged with drama, and that means that its graduates must acquire an acquaintance with the way the theatre works.' No more appropriate scholar could have been found to guide the Centre towards a balanced study of both theatrical practice and textual scholarship. He himself taught courses ranging from the study of Shakespeare and Marlowe to contemporary British and American drama; for the Centre, he contributed lectures on the history of the theatre and offered the first graduate course on the History and Theory of Film. When Professor R.B. Parker succeeded him as Director, he continued to provide encouragement and counsel; he remains today a strong friend to students and staff alike. In tribute, we offer the following checklist of the writings of Clifford Leech, compiled with the assistance of two Drama Centre graduates, Jill Gilliland and Hilda Williams. We are aware that it is not complete; doubtless many items have eluded us. Nor can it be up-to-date, for happily, further work is in the press and more is in progress. It stands, however, as testimony to the extraordinary versatility of a scholar for whom the engagement with drama continues to reveal and clarify 'the way the theatre works.'
