Thank you to Mariana Valverde

This is the first issue of CJLS/RCDS published under the new editorial team comprised of Benjamin Berger, Joane Martel, and Dawn Moore. We wanted to take this opportunity to express our deep gratitude to Mariana Valverde who, along with her previous French manuscript co-editors Michel Coutu and Violaine Lemay, worked tirelessly and ambitiously to invigorate the journal and position it as one of the leading socio-legal journals in the world. Over her seven-year term, Mariana built a hard-working, international editorial board, oversaw the journal’s move to Cambridge University Press, and set a new standard for editorial oversight. She insisted on a vigorous and careful peer-review process, using outstanding readers and offering hands-on editorial involvement with manuscripts, which resulted in thoughtful and detailed responses to authors and ensured timely publication of scholarship. Under Mariana’s watch, CJLS/RCDS flourished, seeing a considerable increase in both quality and quantity of submissions, a revitalization of the journal’s francophone tradition, a notable expansion in circulation, and the establishment of an impressive international reputation. She shaped the journal in a way that maintained its roots in the distinctive Canadian law and society movement and, equally, raised its profile on the international stage.

It is with appreciation for these achievements and a great deal of excitement that we take over the journal and seek to build on Mariana’s vision for CJLS/RCDS. The new editorial team will continue to focus on publishing the best in socio-legal scholarship, whether written in French or English, in Canada or internationally, in social science departments or law schools. Working with our wonderfully supportive team at Cambridge and our superb managing editor and editorial assistants, we will seek to provide a positive, academically rigorous experience for authors, while continuing to publish first-rate research, in both French and English, in a timely and professional manner. Further, we will continue to build the profile and repute of the journal in Canada and internationally. We look forward to working together, with our authors and reviewers, to continue to push the boundaries of law and society scholarship.

Comme il s’agit du premier numéro que RCDS/CJLS publie sous la houlette de la nouvelle équipe de rédaction dirigée par Benjamin Berger, Joane Martel et Dawn Moore, nous souhaitons profiter de l’occasion pour exprimer notre profonde reconnaissance à Mariana Valverde qui, accompagnée de ses corédacteurs en chef des manuscrits français Michel Coutu et Violaine Lemay, a travaillé sans relâche et avec grande ambition pour revigorer la revue et la faire reconnaître comme un des chefs de file en études socio-juridiques. Pendant son mandat de sept ans, Mariana a mis sur pied un comité de rédaction international dévoué, assuré la transition de la revue vers les Presses universitaires de Cambridge et établi de nouvelles normes de rédaction en insistant sur un processus rigoureux d’évaluation par les pairs, ce qui fait appel à des lecteurs attentifs, en favorisant une correction minutieuse des manuscrits et l’acheminement de réponses réfléchies et détaillées aux auteurs, et en assurant la publication ponctuelle des articles. Sous la direction de Mariana, RCDS/CJLS a prospéré grâce à une amélioration considérable à la fois de la qualité et de la quantité des soumissions, à une revitalisation de la tradition francophone de la revue, à une expansion notable du tirage et à l’établissement d’une réputation impressionnante à l’international. Par ailleurs, elle a façonné la revue de manière à en préserver les racines au sein du mouvement canadien en droit et en société, tout en élevant son profil sur la scène internationale.
