sometimes. Sometimes hitis plumb forgotand I drop the h

that starts hillbilly,hellfire, hateful,hope. Sometimes hit

hits the back of my teethand fights hits way out,for hit’s been around

and hit’s tough:hit’s Old English,hit’s Middle, hit’s country,

hit will hit on youall day longif you’ll let hit.

When I hit the booksthey tried to hithit out of me,

but hit’s been hitbelow the beltand above and hit

Melissa Range

melissa range’s first book of poems, Horse and Rider, won the 2010 Walt McDonald Prize in Poetry from Texas Tech University Press. Recent poems have appeared in Image, Subtropics, Birmingham Poetry Review, and New England Review. Beginning in the fall, she will be an assistant professor of English at Lawrence University.
