Since 2004, my work has been questioning my place as a visual artist. I have been researching identities, including my own, and trying to establish reflections concerning the historical perpetuation of exclusion and of violence forced upon people with whom I can relate my belongings. … Such reflections and discussions occupy the poetics of my works and sum up with a deep interest for the political debate articulated to overcoming barriers that involve the artistic making process in Brazil. Tiago Gualberto

TIAGO GUALBERTO, currently a resident of São Paulo, Brazil, was born in 1983 in Igarapé, a small town in the State of Minas Gerais. He studied at the School of Fine Arts of the Federal University in his birth state, and in 2005, he mounted his first solo exhibition, which was part of the Second National Seminar on Affirmative Action, at the Federal University, MG. He has also studied at the University of São Paulo, and he has exhibited his work at a number of visual art venues in Brazil (Museu Afro Brazil in São Paulo, Festival of Black Art of Belo Horizonte, and SESC Sao Caetano Sao Caetano do Sul, for example) and in such countries as the United States, Spain, and Australia. In 2010 he was the Global Winner of the “Pattern Design Competition,” sponsored by the Japan Foundation Tokyo and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan.
