Abstract

This article introduces the Islamic World, a major Pan-Islamic Victorian periodical published during the Hamidean period. It was printed in Liverpool in 1893 and was edited by Sheikh Abdullah Quilliam, the first and last Grand Sheikh of the British Isles appointed by Sultan Abdul Hamid II. The Islamic World was unique as a Muslim publication because it had an international focus with a global circulation that reached over 200 cities around the world. Scholarly discussions of Sheikh Quilliam’s contributions to British Islam have overlooked the Islamic World; scholars tend to minimally refer to it as one of Quilliam’s academic publications, ignoring its broader importance and message. This article seeks to expand knowledge of this internationally prominent, Pan-Islamic Victorian publication.
