  • Editor’s Note
  • Emily Nemens

This issue, my fifth with the journal as its coeditor and prose editor, is also my first: the first issue of The Southern Review in which all the prose selections are my own. Keeping in mind our readers—the loyal and the newcomers—I am excited to share work by fresh voices and familiar friends. I’ve selected for our pages writers and artists from around the globe (quite literally: four continents are represented in this issue), while also electing to continue conversations with authors whose work has appeared in the journal over the course of decades. (Here I should note that since last autumn, I have been fortunate to meet contributors from five decades of The Southern Review, an experience I can only express as humbling.) Finally, I need to thank the generosity of my colleagues, past and especially present, for sharing their knowledge and expertise, both on the page and in their encouraging words to this young editor. I hope you enjoy this issue and many to follow, as we, The Southern Review, head toward our eightieth year. [End Page xi]
