Margery Kempe’s experiences in Rome mimic not only those of female saints but also those of Middle English romance heroines, including Constance and Emaré. The geography and social disorganization of early fifteenth-century Rome contribute to this reading of Kempe as a romance heroine alone in an environment of scarcity, chance, and miraculous events.
