Abstract

In 2009, Umberto Eco curated a series of Louvre programs on the theme of the list, titled Vertige de la liste. As part of these programs, Jacques Roubaud and Christian Boltanski produced a book on the theme, Les habitants du Louvre. In the book and exhibition, lists serve as a lens through which changing relationships between the Louvre and the display of its collections can be considered. The exhibition and book inhabit modes of epistemological inquiry endemic to the museum and collecting practices. They are, in a sense, artistic projects – producing unofficial versions of the history of art from within the Louvre itself.
