Norman H. MacKenzie
1915-2004
The editors of Victorian Poetry note with sadness the death of Professor Norman H. MacKenzie, on March 1, 2004. He was for many years on the faculty of Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. With his colleague, W. H. Gardner, he served as co-editor of the fourth edition of The Poems of Gerard Manley Hopkins (1967), and his intensive and thorough work on Hopkins' manuscripts made a most valuable contribution to the edition, to which his continuing study of Hopkins enabled him to make many changes in later reprintings. In 1990, Professor MacKenzie edited the Oxford English Texts edition of Hopkins' poetry, and his detailed introduction gives further proof of his meticulous and thorough work as a textual scholar. He set high standards to be emulated by other scholars, and he will be greatly missed.
