From the Editor

It is hard to believe that JSL is in its 22nd year and that the Slavic Linguistics Society is already planning its ninth (and even tenth) meeting. The eighth meeting, which took place at the end of October in Szczecin, went off without a hitch, for which we need to thank its chief organizer, Sylwester Jaworski. SLS9 will be in Seattle—at last a stateside meeting that I won’t be driving to—and SLS10 is planned for 2015 in Heidelberg. Seattle dates are already set for 19–21 September 2014, and I for one am very excited about being a part of it. Invited speakers for the University of Washington meeting include Greville Corbett, Roumyana Pancheva, and Olga Yokoyama. Other news is that the newly elected SLS board members are Bojan Belić and Anton Zimmerling. Welcome to both of you! Rotating off are Catherine Rudin, who is replaced by Marc Greenberg as chair, and Andrea Sims. Catherine and Andrea have done a superb job during their tenure in developing the organizational structure of the SLS. So dedicated are they that they have agreed to remain in their current respective positions as treasurer and webmaster. If you have not already done so, check out the SLS web site at: http://www.slaviclinguistics.org/. Additional accomplishments include the fact that we now have by-laws and are incorporated with official 501(c)(3) non-profit status. More to the point, financially SLS is solidly in the black, thanks not only to careful management but also to your donations and to the generosity of 11 (at last count) life members. So if you want to help SLS grow, or if you have ideas for new projects, please contact Marc, Catherine, Andrea, or any member of the board.

Closer to home, there has been yet another change in JSL staffing. Tyler Madsen, who only recently took over as Managing Editor, has decided to move on. Fortunately, we have been able to recruit Rosie Connolly, who served previously as Managing Editor for about five years. While she will have to work remotely, from Texas, in this technological age even I should be able to manage. Reinstating Rosie will draw on her great experience and will add long sought-after continuity to the Journal.

The number of submissions to JSL continues to grow. I remind you that authors are expected to be members before the Associate Editors send their work out for review. We also continue to serve the larger community by publishing memorial tributes (two of which appear in this issue), reviews of books of interest to our readers, and shorter pieces such as “Remarks” and “Replies” as well as editorials under the “Reflections” rubric. Indeed, it has been some time since we printed one of the latter, so if you have any thoughts on the state of the field which you wish to share, I encourage you to contact me with a proposal. Book reviews, as always, are ably handled by Associate Editor Wayles Browne.
