Long ages past having led to us, by now stories of our greatness have so far emblazoned distant places they can be briefly told, for nowhere in the world has such might of walls or height of culture grown, all confirmed by time and acknowledged wherever men aspire beyond the beasts. What soldier’s sword or poet’s song can challenge Troy, who twenty times matched thousands with our tens? One, vaguely hears some outpost— Athens?—thinks well of itself. We’ll not go there.
