  • In Memoriam

Seymour Menton, former Editor of Hispania from 1963 to 1965, and Professor at University of California, Irvine from 1965 to 1994, passed away in March 2014. Dr. Menton was born in the Bronx, New York in 1927. He held a BA from City College of New York (1948), an MA from the Universidad Autónoma de México (1949), and a PhD from New York University. He was the founding chair the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, and later the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, at University of California, Irvine from 1965 to 1994. Dr. Menton published numerous articles and books, including Historia crítica de la novela guatemalteca (1960), El cuento costarricense (1964), Teatro brasileiro contemporáneo (1966), La novela colombiana: Planetas y satélites (1978), Narrativa mexicana desde “Los de abajo” hasta “Noticias del imperio” (1991), Latin America’s New Historical Novel (1993), Historia verdadera del realismo mágico (1998), and Un tercer gringo viejo: Relatos y confesiones (2005). He was awarded the Orden de Andrés Bello in 1991, the Orden de Francisco de Miranda in 1996, and the Orden de Miguel Ángel Asturias in 1997. In 2012, he received the Order of the Aztec Eagle, the highest award from the Mexican government to a foreigner, for his contributions to dissemination of and scholarship about Mexican literature.
