Abstract

Turfing is an improvisation-based dance that defines black street culture in neighborhoods of Oakland and the San Francisco Bay Area. A form of testimony to disproportionate policing, incarceration, and the deaths of black youth, turfing’s local practice persists in counterpoint to the global viral trafficking of hood dance and black performance.
