Mark R. Finlay, 15 September 1960–6 October 2013

Mark Finlay died unexpectedly on 6 October 2013. Mark earned his M.A. and Ph.D. at Iowa State University, completing his dissertation titled “Science, Practice, and Politics: German Agricultural Experiment Stations in the Nineteenth Century” in 1992. That year Mark was appointed assistant professor history at Armstrong Atlantic State University. He was promoted to associate professor in 1998 and full professor in 2005. In 1999 Mark received the prestigious Regents’ Teaching Excellence Award, presented to one professor among Georgia’s twelve four-year colleges and universities. Mark’s most significant scholarly achievement was the publication of Growing American Rubber: Strategic Plants and the Politics of National Security (Rutgers University Press, 2009). He authored over 18 articles and book chapters, including work in press at the time of his death. Contributions in Mark’s memory may be made to the Mark R.
