Sarah Blackwood is assistant professor of English and director of the American studies program at Pace University. She is completing two manuscripts, a monograph titled “The Portrait’s Subject: Inventing Psychology in Nineteenth-Century America,” and a coedited anthology of primary texts titled “‘A More Perfect Likeness’: Nineteenth-Century African Americans Write Visual Culture.”

Marco Cervantes is assistant professor in Mexican American studies at the University of Texas at San Antonio. His research focuses on Chicana/o musicology, hip-hop studies, performance pedagogy, transculturation and shared spaces, black and Chicana/o cultural hybridity, and Afro-Latina/o cultural production. He performs as hip-hop artist Mexican Stepgrandfather and has developed a collaborative space for the creation of the Afro-Chicano hip-hop collective Third Root.

Joseph Darda is a doctoral candidate in English at the University of Connecticut. He is the managing editor of LIT: Literature Interpretation Theory. His work appears or is forthcoming in College Literature, American Literary Realism, minnesota review, and Mosaic. He is also the guest editor of a forthcoming special issue of LIT on literature and American exceptionalism.

Rosemarie Garland-Thomson is professor of English and women’s, gender, and sexuality studies at Emory University, where her fields of study are feminist theory, American literature, and disability studies. Her work develops the field of disability studies in the humanities and women’s and gender studies and seeks to bring an understanding of disability issues and identities to communities inside and outside the academy. She is the author of Staring: How We Look (Oxford University Press, 2009) and Extraordinary Bodies: Figuring Physical Disability in American Culture and Literature (Columbia University Press, 1997); coeditor of Re-Presenting Disability: Activism and Agency in the Museum [End Page 959] (Routledge, 2010) and Disability Studies: Enabling the Humanities (Modern Language Association, 2002); and editor of Freakery: Cultural Spectacles of the Extraordinary Body (New York University Press, 1996). Her current book projects include “Habitable Worlds: Disability, Technology, and Eugenics,” which places materialist analysis of the built environment in conversation with eugenic practices and thought, and a work on disability in film.

Herman Gray is professor of sociology at the University of California at Santa Cruz and has published widely in the areas of black cultural politics and media. His most recent book is Toward a Sociology of the Trace (University of Minnesota Press, 2010), coedited with Macarena Gómez-Barris.

Roya Zahra Rastegar is visiting assistant professor and Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow at Bryn Mawr College, where she teaches courses on independent film culture and curatorial practice. She is the cowriter of Wildness (2012), which premiered at MoMA’s Documentary Fortnight Festival and won a Grand Jury Prize at Outfest, and was awarded a Creative Capital grant for her upcoming installation project on war, desire, and representation. She held a Curatorial Fellow at the Whitney’s Independent Study Program and has participated in the programming of Sundance, the L.A. Film Festival, Tribeca, and the Santa Cruz Women of Color Film Festival.

Britt Rusert is assistant professor of African American literature and culture in the W.E.B. Du Bois Department of Afro-American Studies at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Her research focuses on African American literature of the long nineteenth century, the history of race and science, and critical theory. She is completing a book on the centrality of natural science in early African American print and performance cultures.

Jeannie N. Shinozuka teaches in the Department of Asian and Asian American Studies at the California State University, Los Angeles. Her book-in-progress, “Biotic Borderlands, Constituting Race in Transnational Public Health and Agriculture, 1880–1945,” is on the circulation of plant, insect, and human immigrants across American borders from 1880 to 1945, especially their [End Page 960] journey that crisscrossed the Pacific Ocean, shaping immigration policies, empire building, and chemical warfare.

Stephen Vider is the Cassius Marcellus Clay Postdoctoral Fellow in the History of Sexuality at Yale University. He recently completed his PhD at Harvard University in History of American Civilization, with a secondary field in Studies of Women, Gender, and Sexuality.
