Lady of No Man’s Land is a historical romance which has been selected by Reader’s Digest Condensed Books. Based on factual accounts of “sewing women,” this novel follows Swedish immigrant Kristen Mordal as she makes her way in the West alone. Williams has done her homework, researching the history of the plains with particular emphasis on women’s roles. Kristen’s livelihood parallels that of some single women of the period, as she stays with various families for three months at a time in exchange for sewing a year’s worth of clothing for them. Intertwined with details of historical significance is Kristen’s romantic dilemma: should she wait for her true love, the married guy, or take the rich, devoted suitor who will solve her economic woes?
