Poems by Clifton Snider. (Long Beach: Applezaba Press, 1988. 89 pages, $14.95/$6.95.) Clifton Snider is by no means an unknown poet, but his work is not as widely appreciated as it should be. This volume, which brings together sequences of poems from two trips to Europe separated by eleven years, completes, with the dropping of the “Jesse” and “Edwin” personae, his transition from modern to postmodern artist. The confidence he now exhibits renders accessible to artistic use a rich though often painful personal history. Snider, whose doctorate in literature is from the University of New Mexico, has for years taught at California State University at Long Beach. A cover drawing by Don Bachardy graces the book.
