This article explains how the distinctive features of the marine environment and the shipping industry create unique difficulties for those conducting research on maritime security issues such as piracy, terrorism or illegal fishing. Based in part on the author’s experiences researching piracy in Southeast Asia, the paper argues that despite the difficulties researchers face in obtaining information, fieldwork is still crucial as it adds valuable insights into maritime issues that cannot be gained from published sources.
