The important and timely ASR Forum that appears in this issue has been a long time in production. Jamie Monson and Stephanie Rupp first suggested the topic of “China and Africa” to Ralph Faulkingham over four years ago, and he encouraged them to put together a collection of articles on what has become an essential and increasingly crucial topic throughout the continent. During these four years, this issue has been shepherded to print by close collaboration between the special issue editors, three ASR editors, and our immensely capable copy editor. We believe this ASR Forum, with its thoughtful and well-researched articles, presents a diverse and complex discourse between Chinese and African peoples throughout the continent, and provides ASR readers with insightful descriptions of negotiations over power, place, and meaning that are likely to become even more fundamental to our understanding of Africa in the twenty-first century. We applaud the heroic and tenacious efforts of the special issue editors, of the authors whose work is presented in this issue, and of the outside reviewers whose input was crucial in helping to bring this important issue to fruition. Finally, we are once again indebted to our copy editor, Ella Kusnetz, whose epic efforts have been critical in finally getting this work into print. We believe it was all well worth the efforts, and are convinced that ASR readers will agree that this ASR Forum provides new and essential insight into the rapidly growing Chinese presence on the African continent.
