Rebeccah Bechtold … is an Assistant Professor of English at the University of Northern Colorado where she teaches courses in early American literature. Her current project analyzes how antebellum authors appropriated music to negotiate the social tensions that afflicted nineteenth century American culture.

Michael Grimwood… is Alumni Distinguished Professor of English at North Carolina State University. He has administered the Freshman English Program and the World Literature Program and served as the Associate Head of the Department of English there. He has published a book, Heart in Conflict: Faulkner’s Struggles with Vocation, and various articles and reviews, mostly on Southern U.S. literature. He is now working on separate projects concerning Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Mary Wilkins Freeman, William Faulkner, and Shirley Jackson.

John Mac Kilgore… is currently a lecturer at the University of California, Davis. He is in the process of revising his dissertation into a book manuscript entitled Eleutheromania: American Literatures of Enthusiasm from the American Revolution to the Civil War. “The Free State of Whitman” is a short version of a chapter from the project. Stephen J. Mexal… is an associate professor of English at California State University, Fullerton. His work has been published in journals such as Studies in the Novel, English Language Notes, and MELUS. His book, Reading for Liberalism: The Overland Monthly and the Writing of the Modern American West, is forthcoming in 2013 from the University of Nebraska Press.

Kristen Renzi… is a visiting Assistant Professor of English at Michigan State University; she researches and teaches in the areas of 19th/20th century transatlantic literature, literature and science, performance studies, queer and feminist theory, visual media, and creative writing.
