The papers in this special edition are part of a nationwide study addressing the issues of racialized and Indigenous faculty in Canadian universities. The research was conducted by a multidisciplinary team of critical race scholars who undertook a national study of Canadian universities. We also carried out a more detailed examination of twelve universities that represented a diversity of regions as well as sizes. The study used a multifaceted methodology that included in-depth personal interviews with 105 racialized and Indigenous scholars. More interviews are planned in the following year. A quantitative analysis of census and employment statistics and discourse analysis of mission statements, equity reports and other documentary materials found on University websites was also included. Our study has now completed the second year of a three-year grant, and a nationwide survey of racialized and non-racialized faculty is now planned for the final year.

Each of the seven papers in this special issue examines a particular aspect of the project. It should be noted that this project is still a “work in progress” and these papers present preliminary findings and somewhat limited analysis. In addition to completing the data-gathering part of the project, more in-depth critical analysis and writing is planned in the future. [End Page iii]
