This essay takes a performance-based approach to the textual development of the plays of the English Comedians performing in Germany during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. At the heart of the essay is the experimental bilingual production of Der Bestrafte Brudermord (the "German Hamlet") I directed in Staunton, Virginia, in order to test the idea that surviving German playtexts of English plays feature a pattern of three major alterations: simplification, expansion of the comedic character, and added physicality.
