As Shakespeare Bulletin is transitioning to a new editorial team, it is with sadness that we note the passing away of the journal’s founding editor, Seymour S. Isenberg, at the age of 82 years, on March 23, 2013.

Dr Isenberg was a physician in Teaneck, NJ, who combined his work as a general practitioner with a lifelong passion for stained glass, opera and theatre. He founded and ran the theatre review magazine Stages from 1984 to 1996, wrote plays, was a member of the Drama Desk theatre award committee and of the Mystery Writers of America. His great love of Shakespeare’s drama led him to found Shakespeare Bulletin in 1982 as the organ of the newly organized New York Shakespeare Society and to edit the journal during its first year.

In 1983, the journal passed into the hands of Associate Editors James P. Lusardi and June Schlueter, who co-edited the journal at Lafayette College, Easton, PA. June Schlueter continued as its sole editor after James Lusardi’s death in 2002, editing her last issue in Spring/Summer 2003.

After that, Andrew James Hartley (University of West Georgia and, more recently, University of North Carolina, Charlotte) took over the role of General Editor with the help of Jeremy Lopez (University of Toronto), Genevieve Love (Colorado College) and Kirk Melnikoff (University of North Carolina, Charlotte). Under Andrew Hartley’s leadership, the journal’s editorial board was renewed and a new generation of scholars began to write for the journal. Hartley oversaw the transition of the journal to Johns Hopkins University Press and its electronic distribution via Project-MUSE, ensuring an ever larger readership for what has now become the leading journal in early modern performance studies. Genevieve Love’s stewardship of the Book Reviews section has provided a vital service to [End Page 163] the academic community, while Jeremy Lopez’s vigorous questioning of the role played by theatre reviews has brought critical energy to the reviews published and has seen many college productions of early modern drama reviewed in the journal. The new editorial team, lead by Pascale Aebischer (University of Exeter), with Theatre Reviews Editors Roberta Barker (Dalhousie University) and Paul Prescott (Warwick University) and Book Reviews Editor Kathryn Prince (University of Ottawa), wishes to thank Andrew Hartley and his team for the ten years they dedicated to the journal. Their continued presence as members of the editorial board will, we hope, ensure that we can build on their impressive achievements.
