Stephen Mitchell’s recent book on witchcraft and magic in medieval Scandinavia is a major publication that calls for more than one commentary, and so we have asked both Ronald Hutton and Thomas DuBois to write extended reviews. Both of these commentators note the ambitious quality of the book: its broad geographical scope, and its careful evocation of change over the later medieval centuries. While Hutton gives an analytic summary of the book’s major contributions, DuBois contextualizes key issues that arise in the volume. Together, they indicate the significance of this book not only for Scandinavian studies but for the study of witchcraft and magic more generally. [End Page 73]
