Christopher Phillips is professor of history at the University of Cincinnati, where he specializes in the nineteenth century and the Civil War and Reconstruction. His current book project, “The Rivers Ran Backward: The Civil War on the Middle Border and the Making of American Regionalism,” will be published by Oxford University Press.
