Editorial Note

Dickinson once wrote that “Spring is a happiness so beautiful, so unique, so unexpected, that I don’t know what to do with my heart” (L389). While we are still waiting for spring, here in Buffalo, we have had a lovely and unexpected surprise, leaving us all in smiles: namely, the discovery of a photograph portraying rock legend Alice Cooper as at least a sometimes-reader of the Emily Dickinson Journal. Our thanks for permission to reprint this photograph from photographer Lawrence Schwartzwald, who is in fact a subscriber to the Journal.

And speaking of the surprising, we are retitling our new section in the journal focused on archival discoveries Buried Gold: News from the Archive in order that no one confuses this section with the excellent work of the existing Emily Dickinson International Society Bulletin, which has as its motto “The only news I know / Is Bulletins all Day / From Immortality” (Fr820). Our apologies to the Bulletin for momentarily usurping a part of its byline. Please send us your discoveries, the buried gold you find, on Dickinson.

Other news from the Journal office has to do with two upcoming special issues. This coming Fall 2013, our issue will feature essays submitted to the “Pearls in Eastern Waters: Dickinson and Asia” issue. We hope that all readers will recognize from the work collected there the increasing importance Dickinson has as a writer in the East and that Eastern readers and scholars have for extending our understanding of Dickinson.

At the back of this issue you will see a Call for Papers for a Spring 2014 special issue of the Journal on “Networking Dickinson.” This issue will be co-edited by Eliza Richards and Alexandra Socarides. The due date for submitting work to them for consideration in this issue is July 1, 2013.

Not a surprise but a pleasure is the excitement of returning to the University of Maryland and Washington D.C. (American University) for the EDIS conference “Emily Dickinson, World Citizen,” exploring Dickinson’s various forms of belonging. The conference will take place August 8-11. Again, please see our back matter for information about registering and to hear about its special events.
