In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:

  • Editors' Overview

We are delighted to introduce our first guest-edited and special issue of Civil War History, "The Nature of War." Megan Kate Nelson, already a leader in the emerging field of the environmental history of the Civil War era, took the reins in assembling and vetting the excellent articles included in this issue. We could not be more pleased with the result.

Our book review section features a number of new titles dealing with a wide range of topics, including Emory Thomas's reflection on the beginning of the Civil War and Amanda Foreman's massive new exploration of Great Britain's role in the Civil War. Other reviews touch on Connecticut, African Americans, Mark Twain, the Dred Scott case, medicine, religion, and loyalty questions.

We encourage our readers to contact us with their comments and suggetions for future special issues: civilwarhistory@uakron.edu or our Facebook page: "Civil War History Journal." [End Page 302]
