This article investigates the Austrian characteristics of Heinrich Steinfest’s two Viennese detective novels in comparison to US ethnic detectives in order to define “austriacity” in both novels, first on the stylistic level and second, on the thematic level through the use of representative fictive figures, a realistic Austrian setting, and the shaping of Austrian identity, particularly in comparison with Germans.
