This article examines the literary status of the fifteen-year correspondence between Marie-Anne de La Tour andJean-Jacques Rousseau. De. La Tour initiated the exchange by writing as the incarnation of the fictional Julie, in a successful attempt, it isargued, to produce a publishable "intimate" correspondence with the author of La Nouvelle Héloïse.
