Winners of the Bourges 30th International Competition of Electroacoustic Music and Sonic Art 2003

Winners of the Bourges 30th International Competition of Electroacoustic Music and Sonic Art 2003 have been announced. The jury for the competition was made up of Françoise Barrière (France), Erik Mikaël Karlsson (Sweden), John Christopher Nelson (USA), Jean Michel Ponty (France), Pascale Pronnier (France), Jorge Rapp (Argentina), Michel Redolfi (France), Anne Roquiny (France), and Ulrich Suesse (Germany). Residencies went to Kari Besharse (USA) for Small Things, Konstantinos Karathanasis (Greece) for De Ligno Chalybeque, Mehmet Can Özer (Turkey) for Works 2001/4, Hanns Holger Rutz (Germany) for 5th Residual, Matthias Strassmueller (Germany) for Fusions, and Alexander Volodin (Russia) for The Music of my memory. The Magisterium prize was not awarded this year.

In the category for electroacoustic music in the studio without instruments, prizes were awarded to Mario Mary (Argentina) for Signes émergents and Ambrose Field (UK) for One hell of a place to lose a cow. Mention was made of Apostolos Loufopoulos (Greece) for Erevos. In the category for electroacoustic music in the studio with instruments, prizes were awarded to Gerald Eckert (Germany) for Offen-fin des terres (for ensemble and live electronic) and Laurent Soulie (France) for Ecorce de lune (for ensemble and live electronic). Mentions were made of Miguel Azguime (Portugal) for Derrière son double (for ensemble and live electronic) and Emanuele Casale (Italy) for 5 (for flute, clarinet, and tape). In the category for sonic electroacoustic art works, Mentions were made of Elio Martisciello (Italy) for Presenti successivi and Adrian Moore (UK) for Sea of Singularity. In the category for work for dance or theater a prize was awarded to Luigi Ceccarelli (Italy) for Live (dance: Francesco Scavetta; video: Tone Myskja). In the category for work for installation or environment, a Mention was made of Christophe Ruetsch (France), Frédéric Blin (France), and Pierre Jodlowski (France) for Mendel (interactive sonic installation). In the category for work for multimedia a prize was awarded to Kotoka Suzuki (Japan) for Umidi Soni Colores (video: Claudia Rohrmoser). A Mention was made of Bret Battey (USA) for Writing on the surface (for video and music).

Journées d'Informatique Musicale 2003

Journées d'Informatique Musicale (Musical Computation Days) were held 4–6 June 2003 at l'Ecole Nationale de Musique (ENM) du Pays de Montbéliard (National Music School of the Region of Montbéliard ), in collaboration with the Association Française d'Informatique Musicale (French Association of Musical Computation).

Presentations on Wednesday, 4 June, included Benoît Courribet: "Tools for a Transformational Approach to the Interpretation of Electronic Music" [most paper titles have been translated from French]; Anne Sedes, Benoît Courribet, and Jean Baptiste Thiebaut: "Visualization of Sound with the EGOSOUND Software"; Emmanuel Jourdan, Andrew Gerszo, Roland Cahen, and Rodolphe Saugier: "Interactive Musical Applications for Music Instruction in National Education"; Carlos Caires: "Toward a Notation for Microediting Processes"; Jacopo Baboni-Schilingi and Jean Michel Courtecuisse: "Musical Introduction: Toward Composition with the Use of Data Processing Tools"; Laurent Pottier: "STRAPS, A Piece by Eryck Abecassis for Ensemble with Live Electronics—Problems of Analysis of Pieces with Electronics"; Hans Tutschku: "Vocal Control of Electronics in Real Time"; Thierry Coduys and Cyrille Henry: "New Materials for High Precision Sampling"; and by Moreno Andreatta and Carlos Agon: "Algebraic Formalization of Musical Structures Using Set Theory: Theoretical and Analytical Aspects."

The Wednesday evening performance organized by ENM in collaboration with the Centre International de Création Vidéo Pierre Schaeffer (CICV) with performance on the Scenum Mobile, a portable technical platform for the capture and mixing of images, featured the Percussion Ensemble of ENM and live electronics, with works of Hans Tutschku, Miloslav Kabelac, Iannis Xenakis, and Gérard Grisey.
