Abstract

This article focuses on the rebuke exchange between Hektor and Glaukos at the beginning of Iliad 17. Responding to previous work on the scene, especially that of Carroll Moulton and Bernard Fenik, this work aims to show the richness and complexity of context and character in scenes that can often be seen as simply typical, and asserts that variation in typology appears not only in language, but also in character-specific motivations and responses to specific scenarios.
