It's not often that nineteenth-century poetry studies can claim to have captured the attention of several news media, but the discovery of what may be a second photograph of Emily Dickinson (together with her friend Kate Scott Turner Anthon, taken around 1859) surely meets that claim. If you have not seen this news, you have not been on-line! Because there do continue to be discoveries of objects and information pertinent to Dickinson's life or useful to Dickinson scholarship, the Emily Dickinson Journal is instituting a new section, called "Bulletins all Day," to present archival or other new information. While "The only news" Dickinson knew was "Bulletins all Day / From Immortality" (Fr820), we anticipate that the bulletins you send us will pertain to the temporal, if not the distinctly mortal. We hope you enjoy Peter Schmitt's presentation of Benjamin B. Hickok's 1934 interview with Martha Dickinson Bianchi as the first article to be presented in this category.
I'd also like to call your attention to two upcoming special issues. The first has been announced previously: the Fall 2013 issue of the Journal will present "Pearls in Eastern Waters: Emily Dickinson in Asia." Submissions for this issue are due in our office by November 15, 2012. The second special issue is announced here for the first time. Eliza Richards and Alexandra Socarides are co-editing the Spring 2014 issue of the Journal on the topic of "Networking Dickinson." Please note that submissions for this issue are due to the co-editors by July 1, 2013. See page 122 for details.
In this issue, we are pleased to print four essays on Dickinson and George Eliot first presented as papers at the EDIS International Conference at Oxford University, "Emily Dickinson's Transatlantic Connections," in 2010. This coming summer, we will have the opportunity to reconvene at the eighth EDIS International Conference at the University of Maryland and American University, "Emily Dickinson, World Citizen," August 9-11, 2013. We anticipate equally exciting work as the outcome of that meeting. [End Page vii]
