Abstract

Eighty years after James Joyce and Sylvia Beach first put out the essays of Our Exagmination Round His Factification for Incamination of Work in Progress, culled widely from such fixtures of the Parisian ex-pat scene as Stuart Gilbert and Eugene Jolas, established modernists such as William Carlos Williams, and rising youngsters such as one Samuel Beckett, among others, Tim Conley has gathered together fourteen prominent Joyce scholars to look critically back at the original fourteen contributions. They include: Pamela Brown, Stephen John Dilks, Finn Fordham, Moshe Gold, Laura Heffeman, Patrick A. McCarthy, Vicki Mahaffey, Andrew J. Mitchell, John Nash, Jean-Michel Rabaté, Carol Loeb Shloss, Fritz Senn, Sam Slote, and Dirk Van Hulle. The volume represents the difficulty of, but also the productive historical and contextual clarity gained from, re-evaluating a critical collection tasked, while still in the throes of modernism, with reading and promoting a highly anticipated work even before its completion.
