Contributors Contributors to This Volume vii Karen Doerr obtained her Ph.D. from McGill University, Montreal, and is now teaching German at Concordia University, Canada. She has published in Michigan Studies, The International Fiction Review, German Studies Review, Philological Papers, and in both The Literary Biography ofGerman Fiction Writers and TwentiethCentury German Dramatists. She also contributed to a volume, Shedding Light on the Darkness, devoted to integrating the Holocaust into the North American German Studies curriculum. She has published on German literary antisemitism, women and the Holocaust, language memories of survivors, the German language of genocide, and German proverbs in concentration camps. Dr. Doerr is a research associate of the Simone de Beauvoir Institute for Women's Studies and a research associate and member of the editorial board of the Montreal Institute of Genocide Studies. Esther Fuchs is Associate Professor of Hebrew Literature and Judaic Studies at the University of Arizona, Tucson. She is the author of Encounters with Israeli Authors (Micah, 1982) and Israeli Mythogynies: Women in Contemporary Hebrew Fiction (State University of New York Press, 1987), and the editor of Women and the Holocaust: Narrative and Representation (University Press ofAmerica, 1999). She is also the editor of a recent Shofar issue entitled Women in Jewish Life and Culture (Spring 1999). Brian Horowitz is Assistant Professor ofRussian and Judaic Studies at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He has recently become a Fellow at the Center for Russian and East European Studies at the University of Kansas. He is presently working on a book on the OPE: The Society for the Promotion ofEnlightenment among the Jews ofRussia. Marvin Lunenfeld, Renaissance historian and State University ofNew York Distinguished Teaching Professor ofHistory Emeritus at Fredonia State College, is a frequent lecturer and the author offive books. He has received numerous grants and fellowships. Aaron L. Mackler, Ph.D., is Assistant Professor ofTheology at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. He is the author ofnumerous publications in scholarly and professional journals in the fields of Jewish thought and health care ethics. He has edited Life and Death Responsibilities in Jewish Biomedical Ethics (JTS Press) and is currently completing a book comparing Jewish and Roman Catholic approaches to bioethics, to be published by Georgetown University Press. VIII SHOFAR Spring 2000 Vol. 18, No.3 Harriet L. Parmet, Professor Emerita in the Department of Modem Foreign Languages, has taught Hebrew at Lehigh University since 1976. She specializes in modem Israeli literature in translation, particularly the work ofwomen writers. She coauthored a study of feminist religious views on reproductive technologies and a major article on Haviva Reik, a heroine ofthe Holocaust. Co-founder ofLehigh University's Jewish Studies program and founder of the Jewish Colloquia series, Parmet was responsible for Lehigh's Judaic library acquisitions. She was named a Distinguished Alumnus at Gratz College's centennial celebration. Parmet has published in Midstream, Feminist Teacher, Journal for Feminist Studies in Religion, Jewish Spectator, Nemla Modern Language Studies, Studies in American Jewish Literature, Shofar, Visions International, Hakol, Literary Review, andJewish Women in America-An Historical Encyclopedia. Parmet has coordinated an archaeological dig at Tel Akko, Israel for the Lehigh Valley Association ofIndependent Colleges. She has served on the Executive Board of the Hillel Society and the Academic Board ofAssociates (Berman Center at Lehigh) and has received fellowships for research in Israel and Poland. Judith Morganroth Schneider is Associate Professor of French and Spanish at the University of Maryland Baltimore County. She is the author of Max Jacob: Clown. at the Altar and of numerous essays on French and Latin American Jewish writers. Angelika Timm teaches in the Department ofPolitical Science at the Free University, Berlin. She holds a Ph.D. in the history ofPalestine from Humboldt University, Berlin, where she was the head ofthe Seminar for Israel Studies, 1988-1998. She has been a visiting professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (1992), Bar Ban University (1998), and Haifa University (1999).
