Curtis, Compiler The conference on New York State history held June 7 & 8, 1991 at Bard College , Annandale-on-Hudson, included two papers related to the Society of Friends. William Richardson of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission had a paper for the section devoted to Upstate Material Culture which had as its topic "Social ordering and group portrayal in Dutchess County Quaker gravestones." Christopher Densmore of SUNY at Buffalo gave a paper in the section on Clerics and Missionaries in New York entitled "New York Quakers among the Oneida, Brotherston and Stockbridge, 1759-1840." The Quaker Theological Discussion Group has announced publication of two special issues of Quaker Religious Thought, nos. 75 and 76, devoted to George Fox. A variety of perspectives are discussed on Fox and his work and his message, the centrality of Christ, his spirituality, his use of the New Testament, and his understanding of the church. The Swarthmore College Peace Collection in conjunction with Swarthmore College and Friends Historical Library of Swarthmore College is sponsoring an academic conference in March 1993 to celebrate the bicentennial of the birth of Lucretia Mott. The conference on the work of Mott and other women in the nineteenth century peace movement is entitled "Nineteenth century feminist strategies for non-violence." The annual meeting of the Friends Historical Association took place on Monday , November 11, 1991 at the Friends Meetinghouse at 4th and Arch Sts., Philadelphia. Following a social gathering and dinner in the East Room, some 90 persons convened for the business session and lecture. Margaret Hope Bacon, president of the Association, presided and called for reports from the Treasurer, the membership chair, the editor of Quaker History and the chairpersons of the publications, historical research and nominating committees. Kenneth Carroll, emeritus professor of Religion at Southern Methodist University, Dallas, TX, gave an address on the subject "George Fox and America." The lecture was much appreciated as was the discussion period following. Note: The Library of the Religious Society of Friends in London will be closed May 18-22, 1992 and September 1992 to January 4, 1993. From June to August 1992, the Library will be open but many holdings will not be accessible. No manuscripts, archives or originalpictures will be available (unlessfascimile copies exist), nor will most printed books and pamphlets published before 1700. ...
