BRIEFER NOTICES Prepared by John and Barbara Curtis 631 Walnut Lane Haverford, PA 19041 Kenneth L. Carroll of Southern Methodist University at Dallas, Texas, has published two papers which have not heretofore been brought to our attention. The earliest one which appeared in 1976 is "The Irish Quaker Community at Camden" and is included in the magazine of the South Carolina Historical Society. Carroll's second paper appeared in the October 1978 issue of the Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography under the title, "Irish and British Quakers and their American relief funds, 1778-1797." * * * Robert Judson Leach of the American School at Geneva published "The Hicksite Separation on Nantucket" in Historic Nantucket in the issues of January and April 1978. * * * Clifford Pearce has written about "The Quaker property in Barbados" in the Journal of the Barbados Museum and Historical Society, vol. 35, no. 4, 1978. * ? * T. Joseph Pickvance of Birmingham, England, is the author of "George Fox on the Light of Christ within" in New Foundation Publications, #3, 1978. * * * Herbert Clair Standing has recently deposited a copy of a research paper he has written at the Quaker Collection of Haverford College. The paper is entitled "Historical notes concerning Conservative Friends at Bear Creek, Iowa." This paper was prepared during the summer of 1977 from original materials made available to the author. The paper includes a bibliography listing important privately held manuscript sources. * * * The editors wish to apologize for a mistake in an author's name which was given incorrectly in the Autumn issue of 1978 of QUAKER HISTORY. James A. McGowan is the author of "Station Master on the Underground Railway: Life and Letters of Thomas Garrett." * * * Richard Tod of Bristol, England, has published a very interesting and valuable biographical study of Caroline Stephen, an important spiritual leader in London Yearly Meeting in the period from 1886-1909. Her best known writing was Quaker Strongholds which went through many editions and is still available in extracted form. Caroline Stephen did not join other Quaker women of her day in seeking woman's suffrage and equality for women. She made her contribution in the fields of religious study and social concern for the poor. Unfortunately this study has been produced in mimeographed form on legal size paper, so its circulation is not likely to be adequate to the significance of the personality discussed. There is a 119 120QUAKER HISTORY good bibliography, a complete list of the publications of Caroline Stephen and the text is well annotated with notes. Additional sidelights on this important 19th century English Quaker are provided in an article by the same author in the January 1979 issue of Friends Quarterly with the title, "The originality of Caroline Stephen." * # » In the above mentioned issue of Friends Quarterly there is a report of the appointment of a new editor for the publication as of the January 1980 issue. Melanie Barber, a member of Brighton Meeting, will take up the post held most recently by Richenda Scott, editor 1967-1978. During the interim period editorial responsibility will be delegated to Charles Köhler, as temporary editor. * * * In this department of QUAKER HISTORY we sometimes bring to the notice of readers the issuance of reprints of significance for scholars of Quakerism. Jessamyn West's The Quaker Reader is now back in print again, this time in paperback form. It is published by Viking at $5.95. There is much material of historical interest quoted from the writings of a variety of Quaker and other authors which have a timeless quality. In a similar vein are the 3 volumes published since 1975 at Doubleday, with the title: Doubleday Devotional Classics. Significant portions of the journals of George Fox and of John Woolman appear in volumes two and three of this set. Available in paperback editions, the prices are: volume 1, $3.95; volume 2, $4.95; and volume 3, $5.95. * * * A publication listing many new studies of interest to historians of Quakerism in America is "Dissertations on Pennsylvania History 1886-1976; a bibliography," published in 1978 by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Another arm of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has recently published an addition to the...
