The standard grammars do not have space to devote to a full-length discussion of compound subject constructions. This article provides an overview of the syntactical possibilities and discusses the role of these constructions in narrative. It also discusses variation in the textual witnesses where compound subjects occur. Familiarity with the use of compound subjects helps the reader identify main characters and navigate textual problems associated with the constructions.
