This essay traces the motif, particularly popular in the late nineteenth century but known also in chronicles from the fourteenth to sixteenth centuries, of Arthur's battle with Flolo (Frollo) in Brittany. Following the battle, Arthur adopts the Breton ermine arms as his own, and legend has emphasized the king's close connection to Brittany.
