The Jeaste of Sir Gawain critiques the repeated failure of chivalric violence to build relationships among knights, protect women or provide beneficial solutions to conflicts. Through the character of the woman, the romance suggests that verbal and legal modes of reconciliation could create more social benefit than knightly violence does.
