Nigro Department of Languages and Linguistics at the University of Texas, El Paso knigro@utep.edu 915-776-7026 106 LATIN AMERICAN THEATRE REVIEW Severino Albuquerque receives two prestigious awards We congratulate Severino Albuquerque on two prestigious awards: the 2005 Roberto Reis BookAward from the Brazilian StudiesAssociation (BRASA), and the 2008 Elizabeth A. Steinberg Award from the University of Wisconsin Press, for his book Tentative Transgressions: Homosexuality, AIDS, and the Theater in Brazil (2004). The BRASA award recognizes the best book in English about Brazil published between 2003 and 2005, and the Wisconsin prize is for the book that brought most distinction to its University Press since its publication. In the book, Albuquerque follows changing theatrical motifs in Brazil through the twentieth century, showing how theater served as a vehicle to challenge dominant ideas about gender and otherness in a patriarchal culture. In a Wisconsin Week interview, Albuquerque explained how theater could increasingly express ideas that would otherwise be censured or silenced, and commented, “The plays [in Brazil have] moved away, if ever so slowly, from shyly showing homosexuality as a transgression to...contributing to an acceptance...that gay-nuanced plays can have the same universality of drama as plays by and about heterosexuals .” SeverinoAlbuquerque is Professor of Portuguese at the University of Wisconsin –Madison and past director of the LatinAmerican, Caribbean, and Iberian Studies program.
