36 RM-MLA NEWS 1967 Meeting Sets Record The 1967 meeting of the Rocky Mountain Modem Language Association , held in Albuquerque, 13-14 October , was the best-attended annual meeting to date. A total of 321 were present. Participants came from both coasts: Washington and California as well as Maryland and New York were represented and the Association's international character was indicated by the presence of Canadian members. Seventeen states were represented as well as the province of Alberta; and the participants came from 62 different institutions . The state of Colorado took first place in numbers of people attending with 98; second was New Mexico with 82; and tied for third place were Utah and Arizona, each with 28. BRMMLA The association bibliographer of the Modern Language Association of America , Harrison T. Meserole, has just added the RM-MLA Bulletin to the master list of journals regularly searched for the MLA International Bibliography for items for inclusion in each year's compilation of scholarship. The symbol under which the Bulletin will appear in the Master List is BRMMLA. Already included in the MHRA Annual Bibliography of English Language and Literature, the Bulletin now will be represented in the two major bibliographies which cover the field of modern language. Executive Board Interim Meeting The executive board of RM-MLA held an interim meeting Friday and Saturday, 8-9 December 1967, at the USAF Academy. Present were Colonel Gatlin, President; George Arms, Honorary President; R. Max Rogers, VicePresident ; A. Wilber Stevens, Member at Large; and Henry Pettit, Executive Secretary. Charles Africa, Member at Large, was unavoidably absent. The Friday night session covered a wide range of topics of general consideration and speculation concerning Association objectives and procedures. The Saturday morning meeting, in Colonel Gatlin's quarters at the Academy was given to considerations of three matters: (1) general Association plans, (2) the 1968 meeting, and (3) the Bulletin. Four principal matters were taken up under general plans: (1) a junior college program, (2) the Stone committees , (3) incorporation of RMMLA , and (4) the date of the 1969 meeting. On the first item, considerable attention was given to the desirability and means of bringing junior college faculty into the Association and of inviting their proposals of programs. Suggestions were in the direction of conferences and publications concerned with the problems of departmental chairmen and with faculty interest in methods, curriculum, and such specific topics as foreign language requirements . On the second item, the matter of Association committees, discussion began with a proposal to activate one committee only but this was set aside in favor of four small committees , as proposed by President Stone of MLA, having to do with national, state, and foundation matters, and with standards in research. The last committee was renamed the committee on development in language and literature , purposely phrased to give the committee a wider scope and a more continuous objective. On the third item, acting on advice of officers of the Modem Language Association, the board recommended incorporation and authorized the executive secretary to proceed on the matter. On the fourth item, the dates for the 1969 meeting at the invitation of Brigham Young University , Friday and Saturday 10-11 From the Mountains and Beyond 37 October were approved subject to reconsideration in the event the dates were not free of serious conflicts. In the matter of the 1968 meeting at the Air Force Academy in association with Colorado College, it was agreed that a principal address might be scheduled for the first general wel- Ĺ“ming meeting on Friday and that the luncheon speaker deal generally with a topic which could be followed by ancillary approaches during a plenary session immediately following. It was suggested that the general theme might deal with interdisciplinary possibilities along the lines explored by James Thorpe in the recent MLA publication "Relations of Literary Study." The topics covered are the relations of literature and history, myth, biography, psychology , sociology, religion, and music. Also during the discussion of the...
