Jean Stromsoe is the new head of die English department at Loretto Heights College. She attended the ADE Department Chairman Workshop at Pennsylvania State University die last week in June. Patricia Gardner (English, Utah State University) is on a year's leave to participate in a tri-university project on language arts curriculum, held in conjunction with die universities of Washington , New York, and Nebraska. Phillip Boxer is die new chairman of the English department at Metropolitan State College. Boyd K. Herren is die new Humanities division chairman. William M. Russell became die new chairman of die Modern Language department at the University of Texas at El Paso, following the resignation of E. T. Ruff, the department head for the last 22 years. Lawrence H. Rice, the current chairman of the English department at Idaho State University, has been appointed assistant dean of the College of Liberal Arts. Leedice Kissane (English, Idaho State University) has been promoted to professor, and Waller B. Wigginton to associate professor. Albert R. Lopes (Portuguese, University of New Mexico) was knighted on August 7 by die Portuguese government as Comendador in the Order of Prince Henry die Navigator. The honor, one of the highest that Portugal can bestow, commended Professor Lopes for die pioneering work he has done in establishing Portuguese studies in die United States. Professor Lopes is now on terminal sabbatical; his responsibilities will be assumed by Jack E. Tomlins, newly arrived from Princeton . Claude-Marie Book (French, University of New Mexico) is now on sabbatical leave in Paris where she has been invited to give a series of lectures at the Sorbonne. Sabine Ulibarri (Spanish, University of New Mexico) escorted a summer tour of Ecuador, where for two years he directed an NDEA-sponsored Institute for High School Teachers. The distinguished scholar of eighteentii century English literature, Ronald Salmon Crane, died the 27th of August at his home in Chicago. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Julia L. Fuller Crane, a daughter, Mrs. William M. Gibson, and a son, Ronald F. Crane. Pichette, former head of the department of modern languages at Regis College, is the new president of Western State College of Colorado at Gunnison. G. B. Harrison, who has retired and is now living in Santa Fe, will teach a course in Shakespeare's comedies at the College of Santa Fe during spring semester of 1968. Lucie Heymann, whose novel By Appointment Only won a Book of the Month Club award in 1957, is now instructor of French at the College of Santa Fe. She has recently been instrumental in organizing a Santa Fe branch of the Alliance Française. Vardis Fisher, distinguished American novelist, will be writer-in-residence at the College of Idaho during the winter session of 1968. Aziz S. Atiya (Languages, University of Utah) has retired from the Middle East Center of the University of Utah to devote full time to research and was named a distinguished professor of history...
