RMMLA PAST PRESIDENTS: V ADOLPHE J. DICKMAN: 1949-50 Student, soldier, teacher, Dr Adolphe J. Dickman came to the United States in 1919 from his native Antwerp , Belgium, following service ir a machine gun unit of the Belgiar army during the trying years of 19141918 . Previous to his service he had been a student at the Athénée Royale and the Institute Supérieur of Antwerp. Wounded in the war, hospitalized in England, forced to abandon his studies, he was the recipient of military honors; the Belgian Croix de Guerre, the Chevalier d'Ordre Belge, the Croix de Feu, and other decorations. In the United States, Professor Dickman taught first at Baylor University , 1919-22, then at the University of Iowa, where he received his doctorate in languages in 1925. He joined the faculty at Wyoming in 1932 as head of modem languages, and since 1934 has been full professor. In addition to his instructional and administrative duties he also taught fencing, producing winning teams. Through AAUP he worked vigorously for faculty tenure, improved the offerings of his department, increased the language library, brought major French films to the campus, and encouraged a lively chapter of Phi Sigma Iota, for which honorary society he served as national president in 1949-52. In 1934 he was titled Officier d'Academis by the French government for his services. He also served as president of the Colorado-Wyoming Academy of Letters, as well as president of its successor, the Rocky Mountain Modem Language Association. Unable to remain aloof from World War II, Dr. Dickman served as Liaison Officer with French and American forces, moving from North Africa to Italy, to the invasion of France, and into Germany, with the rank of captain, then major. He was again the recipient of military honors: the French Croix de Guerre, the Legion of Honor, and the U.S. Victory medal with five stars. Dr. Dickman then helped program the GJ. University at Shrivenham, England, heading the modem language division. Dr. Dickman has long maintained an interest in the teaching of languages in the elementary schools, and carried a group of Laramie children from the third grade into junior high school in French, with excellent results. With his wife, Henriette (Moussiegt) Dickman, also a capable teacher, RMMLA Past Presidents215 he published in 1954 a Basic French text, widely used, and edited Belgian and French texts, notably Lenormand and Molière's Bourgeois Gentilhomme. He has published critical articles on such authors as van der Meersch, Paul Reynal, and Marcel Proust. A son, François, has been for some years in the foreign service of the U.S. State Department in Africa and the Near East, most recentiy in Tunisia. Dr. Dickman's energies continued unabated until a coronary setback forced his retirement in 1961, though a gradual recovery permits his almost daily walk to the campus and the University library, and the visits of friends at his home at 1407 Sheridan in Laramie, Wyoming. —From Wilson O.
