The last ten or fifteen years have seen a strong upsurge of interest in the theory and methodology of lexicography. One of the centers of these activities in Western Germany is the Institutfür deutsche Sprache in Mannheim, which relatively frequently organized conferences on various lexicographic topics. The papers of these conferences usually are published in the Institute's monograph series Sprache der Gegenwart. Let us quote, e. g., the volume Interdisziplinäres deutsches Wörterbuch in der Diskussion (editors H. Henne, W. Mentrup, D. Mohn, H. Weinrich; Sprache der Gegenwart 45, Düsseldorf 1978); or Wortschatz und Verst ändigungsprobleme. Was sind 'schwere Wörter' im Deutschen! (editors H. Henne and W. Mentrup; Sprache der Gegenwart 57, Düsseldorf 1983). A similar interest in Reviews269 lexicography can be noticed in Eastern Germany as well; cf., e. g., the volume Die Lexikographie von heute und das Wörterbuch von morgen (edited by J. Schildt and D. Viehweger in Linguistische Studien, Reihe A, Arbeitsberichte 109, published by the Central Linguistic Institute of the Academy in East Berlin, 1983). However, it is not only such institutes that publish volumes of papers on lexicography ; cf., e. g., the volume Konzepte zur Lexikographie: Studien zur Bedeutungserklärung in einsprachigen Wörterb üchern (edited by W. Mentrup in the series Germanistische Linguistik 38, Tübingen 1982). One of the German scholars most active in this development of the theory and methodology of lexicography (an area of research frequently referred to as Metalexikographie in Germany) is Prof. Herbert E. Wiegand of Heidelberg. One of his important undertakings is the publication of the series of volumes here under review. Four volumes have already been published; two more should appear soon. These four volumes comprise 34 articles by different scholars, with four introductions by Wiegand to the single volumes; the total number of pages is 1624. Since theoretical and methodological questions are in the focus, it follows that in spite of the title, these "Studies in New High German lexicography" command a broader interest. Most of the articles study various categories of the lexicon and their properties, and the way in which they are or should be treated in dictionaries. They pertain to German function words and the description of their role in the sentence in the respective entries (W. Wolski, Die Modalpartikel 'schon' in Wörterbüchern und linguistischen Untersuchungen. Ein Beitrag zur praktischen Lexikologie, vol. IV, 453-486), to English loan-words and their acceptance in German (B. Carstensen and P. Hengstenberg, Zur Rezeption von Anglizismen im Deutschen, III, 67-118), to phraseological units, their typology, and their description in dictionaries (H. Burger, Phraseologie in den Wörterbüchern des heutigen Deutsch, III, 13-66; P. Kühn, Pragmatische und lexikographische Beschreibung phraseologischer Einheiten: 270Reviews Phraseologismen und Routineformeln, IV, 175-235), to 'hard words' and the methods for defining them and for distinguishing them from other words (G. Strauss and G. Zifonun, Versuch über 'schwere Wörter': Zur Frage ihrer systembezogenen Bestimmbarkeit, IV, 381-452), and to [politically] 'explosive' words (F. Hermanns, Brisante Wörter. Zur lexikographischen Behandlung parteisprachlicher Wörter und Wendungen in Wörterbüchern derdeutschen Gegenwartssprache, II, 87-108); other articles pertain to regionalisms (H. Niebaum, Die lexikographische Behandlung des landschaftsbezogenen Wortschatzes in den Wörterbüchern der deutschen Gegenwartssprache, IV, 309-360...
