In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:

Editorial Comment The idea for this journal belongs to Archie Bush. In the spring of 1987 he formulated plans for a new journal that would give preference to research that is interdisciplinary and not mainstream in Classics. He felt strongly that there should be a journal devoted to work of this nature because of his own work in the field. Despite his debilitating illness Archie spent countless hours on details of finance and production at the early stages of the project. Without his persistence there would be no Syllecta Classica. In assuming the responsibility of editors we hope that we have discharged our obligation to Archie's vision. We dedicate the present volume to his memory. Many people have helped us. We wish to thank Professor Gerhard Loewenberg, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Iowa, and Professor Duane C. Spriestersbach, former Dean of the Graduate College, for their moral and material support. Valerie LaGorio, professor of English, and in particular Don McCloskey, professor of Economics and History, have given generously of their time and experience as editors. Our colleagues in the Department ofClassics at the University of Iowa have helped in countless ways with general advice and their own expertise in the field. Our typists, graduate students in the department, have done a heroic job, often with difficult manuscripts, and we offer heartfelt thanks for extraordinary effort to Cindy Smith, Barbara McCauley and Marianne Graff. The problems of production have been minimized by the support of Mary Hussman, the University of Iowa Press, Lin Hartman, Department of Printing, and Warren Paris of Paris Concepts, who designed our cover. Finally, Jean Cash, departmental secretary, deserves much gratitude for doing a thousand things in connection with the journal. This is the inaugural issue. Plans proceed for the publication of Volume 2, to appear in the fall of 1990. We encourage submission of articles on any topics related to Classics, especially from beginning scholars, and in particular papers that are interdisciplinary. All entries are refereed. Every effort will be made to respond about acceptance promptly. Inside the back cover there is a subscription form. We ask that you support the journal by subscribing. If you have not yet subscribed, we ask that you consider doing so and that you encourage your library to do so as well. Erling B. Holtsmark Helena R. Dettmer Co-Editors, Syllecta Classica ...
