Abstract

By examining historical events, it is possible to extrapolate trends and patterns that can facilitate the interpretation of issues in the present and the future. By looking at the developing of the position of dean of men and tracing the patterns of institutional response to change in and outside of the academy to this position, it is possible to anticipate how current trends in higher education may play out in the future.
